HIKING

One of the most beautiful places to exercise on campus is “A” mountain. Located on the south side of campus, the mountain, also known as the Tempe Butte, stands at 1496 feet. The mountain is home to Arizona State University’s 60 feet tall, steel letter A. Along the mountain there is a trail which allows people from the community to take a nice, short hike and enjoy a nice view. The hike is only about half a mile long but is definitely a challenge.

Many people run up “A” mountain but most just walk it. Walking is said to be a “lazy man’s exercise” but walking up a mountain like the Tempe Butte has been proven to show quick improvement in stamina, strength, and muscle toning (Rew 1). According to Kate Rew’s newspaper article people can reduce their risk of getting a heart attack by 25 percent if they walk two miles daily. Even though the hike is only a little over half a mile this can be a good way to start an exercise routine. Walking up the dirt trail there is a striking view of Tempe including the town lake. This can be a great opportunity to exercise with friends and get a breath taking view of the town. “A” mountain is also a convenient place to work out at because it is never crowded and it is available all day every day and students can work out at any time that fits their schedule.

It is important for students to try to fit small exercises like hiking up the mountain in their schedules in order to make their lives healthier and more productive. Walking has been proven to ‘improve bone mass, help with stress, reduce depression, and improve a person’s self-image’ (Rew 1). This is extremely important in college students, especially freshmen, due to the fact that they are in a new environment and have many new responsibilities. “A” mountain is a great area to exercise on campus and breaks the routine of going to the gym every time for a workout.
